About the author

Hans Christian Andersen (/ˈhɑːnz ˈkrɪstʃən ˈændərsən/; Danish: [hanˀs kʰʁæsd̥jan ˈɑnɐsn̩] ( listen); often referred to in Scandinavia as H. C. Andersen; 2 April 1805 – 4 August 1875) was a Danish author. Although a prolific writer of plays, travelogues, novels, and poems, Andersen is best remembered for his fairy tales. Andersen's popularity is not limited to children; his stories, called eventyr in Danish or "fairy-tales" in English, express themes that transcend age and nationality.
Andersen's fairy tales, which have been translated into more than 125 languages, have become culturally embedded in the West's collective consciousness, readily accessible to children, but presenting lessons of virtue and resilience in the face of adversity for mature readers as well. Some of his most famous fairy tales include "The Emperor's New Clothes", "The Little Mermaid", "The Nightingale", "The Snow Queen", "The Ugly Duckling", and many more.
His stories have inspired ballets, both animated and live-action films, and plays.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2014This is a classic Christmas story with excellent illustrations. I bought a used copy and the seller did an excellent job to make sure I was satisfied when I mentioned that it had a little more wear and tear than I expected.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2011I never heard of this Hans Christian Anderson's Fairy Tale until my daughter viewed Fantasia 2000. However the story is much different than what is depicted on film. I bought the paperback edition yet I would prefer a hardcover to pass down to my child. The story is very tragic for the soldier and his love when both are put to the test. Many scenes appear by chance and left for the reader to fill in the blanks yet I believe this was deliberately hidden and turned into metaphor in a time when the people were censored in Europe.

P.J. Lynch's illustrations are really beautiful. But I gave it 2 stars because the illustration of the "black goblin" is too creepy. My second grader would have been scared by it. It's just that one double-page layout that features the goblin, but just wanted to warn others who may have sensitive kids.

Very beautiful book with exceptional quality of illustrations. There are some scribblings and stickers but it is a used book anyway.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mysterious magical charming .
Not your usual happy ending and it provoked some remarkably mature remarks from my son on the nature of courage and love, the author credited his young readers with greater intelligence than many of his modern counterparts and that is all to the good .
