Sophie Roell`s biography

I’m Sophie Roell and I’m co-editor of FiveBooks. I did my undergraduate degree in modern history at Oxford and, after working as a journalist in China in the mid-1990s (reporting for the Financial Times and Euromoney magazine), was so intrigued by the country’s politics and 20th-century history that I took a Master's in East Asian Studies at Harvard. My thesis was on the religious revival in contemporary rural China. I’ve done a lot of financial reporting, in London, New York, Beijing, Shanghai and even Pyongyang, where Dow Jones kindly encouraged me to go when I was a staff reporter for them in Shanghai. Now, in addition to my work on FiveBooks, I write articles for The Times of London and occasional columns for The National, the Abu Dhabi-based English language newspaper.
