Mika is not your average twelve-year-old—and she’s about to prove it.

It’s 1880, and in the frigid city of Stockholm, death lurks around every corner. Twelve-year-old Mika knows that everyone in her orphanage will struggle to survive this winter. But at least the notorious serial killer the Night Raven is finally off the streets…or is he?

Mika is shocked when a newborn baby is left at the orphanage in the middle of the night, by a boy with a cryptic message. Who is he? And who is this “Dark Angel” he speaks of? When a detective shows up, Mika senses something even more sinister is going on.

Drawn in by Mika’s unique ability to notice small details—a skill Mika has always used to survive—the gruff Detective Hoff unwittingly recruits her to help him with his investigation into a gruesome murder. Mika knows she should stay far, far away, and yet…with such little hope for her future, could this be an opportunity? Maybe, just maybe, this is Mika’s chance to be someone who matters.

The unlikely pair work together to solve the mystery behind a serial killer’s whereabouts utilizing Mika’s Sherlock-Holmes style of logic. This was fast-paced and endearing while also providing a dose of mystery and a window into the hardships of survival for someone like Mika. Grim, but hopeful. Dark, but with moments of sweetness. Even though the story takes place in the 1800s, in Europe, it’s written in such an accessible way that I could see, hear, and practically smell it.

I’m a fan of Tamora Pierce, and throughout the story, it kind of felt like her style. (If you haven’t read it, try her “Bloodhound” trilogy and tell me they aren’t in the same vein of storytelling. She also sees the gritty, dirty, unromantic side of life without electricity. And yet she manages to make all the dirty, grubby characters likeable. It’s a gift that this author shared. So did another favorite author of mine — Charles Dickens.)

The story, characters, plot, and pacing are all top notch. As is the translation. Well, more transliteration, I believe, because you’d never suspect this wasn’t originally written in American English.

I keep thinking about my 7-year-old grandniece and wondering at what age it would be appropriate for her to read this. I would say at least 10 or 11. It has some pretty mature themes of death, starvation, and physical abuse. And murder.

But reading it as an adult, it really doesn’t read as a children’s book, other than the protagonist being 12 years old (going on 40). It’s deft, clever, and has dropped clues to a greater mystery that I’m looking forward to reading more about. I can’t recommend this book enough!

*I think it's age appropriate and want my middle schooler to read it- the only other review said this was questionable, I don't think so. Much better then most child friendly scary movies, we don't read about any violence just find a body, and there isn't anything sexual*

This is great for young adults and still quite enjoyable for me as a well read adult. But for teens I think it's fantastic and I don't recall seeing anything like this when I was that age. It is fairly short and the word usage and construction is fairly simple but it doesn't talk down to the reader in anyway and is rather unapologetic about the few larger more difficult words and concepts it uses.

It has a diverse group of characters, and covers topics entirely left out of many other books (poverty, disability, children working, etc). This will likely be the first time many of it's readers will have had to stop and question things like who is a monster and who is a role model and even when murder is justified (don't worry, it's not justfied, and the book makes clear arguments against it).

I've read a great deal of adult fiction and even some philosophical books that didn't get my attention or provoke as much thought as this little book did. I really hope I can get my child to read it and hopefully discuss some of the finer points.

I also really liked that it was set in Sweden, and the murder wasn't just a jack the ripper rip-off.

I'll also be getting the next book for mg next sleepless night.

I was not real sure what to expect starting this story. I am not familiar with the author and not real sure what genre this is considered. It was a free kindle book that looked interesting. The language was clean but there is talk of death and killing. A dead body is described but it isn’t gory just disturbing. I think I will check out the next in the series. There are parts that really stretch the imagination, especially Mika’s interaction with the detective. It seems as if it is written for a younger audience that likes darker stories. I recommend it to anyone who likes detective stories but want something a little lighter and easy to read.

Mika calls to mind a young Sherlock Holmes, with an attention to detail that combines all the senses. This will be a fun series.

Until reading the notes at the end. Very good story. Rather like Great Expectations, except Pip is a young girl. Who it turns out is very intelligent and strong. She risks her own life to protect the children in the orphanage. She impresses the police detective with her logical deciphering of the clues and her strong moral compass. Great heroine for the time line of the story.

An interesting story of an orphan with an exceptional eye that helps a detective solve a crime. But also tangled in there is a new child that arrives at the orphanage with a bracelet around her ankle that is delivered by a mysterious boy. Who is this child? And who is Mika for that matter? So many questions that need to be answered. A very quick read, but a great storyline.

So, I'm a bit (a lot) older then the intended demographic of this book, but I loved it. I read it in one go, hooked on the intrigue. I love the main character who is a smart street wise little girl. It's easy to understand and feel the setting and the period. I loved the dymanics between the characters. Honestly a great read even if you are older! ;)

I will gladly read the next ones in this series!

I really enjoyed this story. The book is probably best suited to age 10-13, but as an adult, I also thoroughly enjoyed it
12 year old orphan Mika is caught up in a web of intrigue and murder when a baby is abandoned at the orphanage where she lives . Her eye for detail and ability to blend into the streets attracts the attention of the brusque detective investigating a series of murders and so begins what I hope will be a long partnership. I can't wait for the next book to be published later this year

I found myself in a cold world where death feels as if it could approach on every page. Rundberg has written a story that despite being a YA novel confronts mature themes of death, poverty, charity and work. He has written a story which is as enjoyable to me as an adult reader as I think it would be for a teen.

One of the major strengths of the story has been Rundbergs character development. Mika as a main character is relatable especially for teens as she is a girl who both seeks to be grown up in a time of hardship and feels responsibilities weighing on her, but also seeks to be a child in a world that won't allow it.

This is a mystery but all the loose ends felt tied up apart from those that clearly lend themselves to the sequel. What I will say was refreshing is how Mika describes how she knows things and identifys things. I hate reading mysteries where the detective just finds evidence or just knows things without context, Mika explains to us as readers where her knowledge comes from and it make the story believable and easy to follow.

I could say more but what I will say is I will be buying the sequel as I thoroughly enjoy every page of this. The only reasons its a 4 star and not a 5 is because I feel like there were alot of side characters at times - some more relevant than others but I found it hard to keep track of the names.

Highly recommend this as a read!
