The Times columnist Melanie Reid was 51 when she fell from her horse and broke her spine, leaving her paralysed from the chest down. With dark humour, she describes her journey from intensive care through rehabilitation to the difficult return home, recalling both the moments of despair and how ‘you learn, very slowly, to recover joyâ€.

A step-by-step account of what it is like to break your neck. From topfit to paralyzed in seconds. It helps me not to take my health for granted and to know more about the less fortunate and how to approach them

I really “enjoyed” this book. I was awed by Melanie’s courage and experiences and laughed and cried often. I highly recommend it.

Beautifully written, fascinating, harrowing and humbling. This book has made me appreciate how lucky I am to be able to dance and how easily that can be taken away. Melanie is a true hero in my eyes.

This is a fairly good memoir. But the cult of the NHS is strong with this one. It is interesting how the Brit middle classes are content to laud indifferent/offensive/inadequate healthcare because it is “free.” The author is putting a lipstick on this pig for several pages here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!

Inspirational. Warts and all, Melanie tells us the story of her paralysis as it is, touching on all the mental agony and anger her situation throws her into. Her final acceptance that there is a life to be enjoyed when acceptance of her situation and its continuing slight changes has been made is humbling. As she says, every spinal injury is different and individual, but reading this book may help some sufferers. It certainly helped this able bodied lady to understand all the trauma tetraplegic people have to overcome. I salute you, Melanie Reid!

The message I took from this book is to be thankful for the life you have, which means most to the able-bodied of us of course. If things in our life are not as we wish them to be, perhaps we can learn to be happy enough despite this.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most poignant books I have ever read.....

.....and I have read an awful lot. I read this book with trepidation not merely because of the subject matter but I fet that it may be a lttle self-pitying. This was not the case, the prose is sublime easy to read and heartfelt. I was there with Melanie throughout her whole sad experience and the love and care people showed her was amazing. When she got back on a horse with such grit and determination my heart was in my mouth - I know it didn't end well but the courage she showed throughout her whole incarceration was breathtaking. She shed a lot of tears but her strength of character was second to none and I will continue to read Spinal Column with a greater insight into her accident and recovery. Thank you for writing such a wonderful book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not my ususal choice but I'm so glad I read it
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 26, 2021
I read Melanie's page in the Times magazine every Saturday and have done so for quite a while and thought I would enjoy the book and learn just what she and Dave had gone through since the accident. Yes, I thought it was a good book in that it was factual and opened my eyes to what does happen to someone who has lost the use of part/all of their own body. I've read other comments and find some to be harsh because this is her story and how it affected her. One day Dave may write his own and that would be his perspective. I am sorry that this happened to Melanie and that they both have to cope with so much BUT it puts my own moans and groans to bed because I am so thankful I am not in her position. I would recommend it but it's not a happy ever after book but very informative to all-especially those considering nursing. I did laugh outloud a couple of times but it is a sobering book and one that should have been written and will give hope to others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bitter sweet - a great read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 25, 2019
I follow Melanie's column in the Times Magazine on Saturdays and am always humbled or inspired so thought I would buy the book. It is easy to read, laugh out loud in places but also vey honest about what happens to a career woman when the unexpected leaves you in a wheelchair. Melanie writes in such a way so that you do not feel sorry for her but admire her spunk and "get on with it" attitude. I would recommend this as a holiday read that will make you grateful for two functioning legs but also for the warm caring people in our society that support those who are less fortunate. Go Melanie!
