About the author
Born in Torquay in 1890, Agatha Christie began writing during the First World War and wrote over 100 novels, plays and short story collections. She was still writing to great acclaim until her death, and her books have now sold over a billion copies in English and another billion in over 100 foreign languages. Yet Agatha Christie was always a very private person, and though Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple became household names, the Queen of Crime was a complete enigma to all but her closest friends.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2024This books takes you on a ride to solving a mystery with twists along the way! I added this book to our book club and decided it would be fun to do a murder mystery party to go along with it. It was so much fun and a great discussion.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2024I don’t often read murder mysteries as the thrill of the murder and solving a puzzle is not something I chase, though I enjoy a good who dunnit. I admire the details of the plot and how each murder was orchestrated.
I liked the motif of the Ten Soldiers poem, which gave the entire murder mystery a pleasing sense of structure.
Some of the stories moved me particularly, especially the one of Vera who let a child drown so her lover could inherit what had gone to the nephew. But it was bittersweet because her lover loved the child and knew in his heart and she had let him die and they could not be lovers again.
I also thought the idea of justice for those who are beyond the retributive reach of the law was very interesting. And for that the epilogue at the end where the murderer reveals all was very thoughtful.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2017And Then There Were None
----Spoilers----
In the book, “ And Then There Were None”, by Agatha Christie ten people were invited out to work in a place called Soldier Island. They all had arrived and got acquainted with one another quickly. Guests soon had fallen upon a poem that was hung up throughout the house. It stated, “ Ten little soldier boys went out to dine; One choked his little self and then there were Nine. Nine little soldier boys sat up very late; One overslept himself and then there were Eight. Eight little soldier boys traveling in Devon; One said he’d stay there and then there were Seven. Seven little soldier boys chopping up sticks; One chopped himself in halves and then there were Six. Six little soldier boys playing with a hive; A bumblebee stung one and then there were Five. Five little soldier boys going in for law; One got into chancery and then there were Four. Four little soldier boys going out to sea; A red herring swallowed one and then there were Three. Three little soldier boys walking in the Zoo; A big bear hugged one and then there were Two. Two little soldier boys sitting in the sun; One got frizzled up and then there was One. One little soldier boy left all alone; He went and hanged himself. And then there were None.” Thinking nothing of this poem, the guests just continued settling in. Later in the same day they arrived, a record was played while they were all together. This record spoke of supposed murders that each guest committed. After this traumatizing event, the guests tried to figure out who exactly was behind this. Before they could find out for sure, an unfortunate situation took place. One of the guests had unexpectedly choked and died, or at least that’s what it looked liked at first glance. Upon further inspection, it was apparent that somebody had poisoned him. There was a murderer in the house and they needed to expose him or her before they killed anyone else. The book continues on, and so do the murders, which follow the poem that is displayed in the house.
Overall, I did not really like this book. It had a relatively good storyline, but was extremely slow. It was also very predictable, and something that I personally had to force myself to continue reading. Although, I do think it would have been more enjoyable if I had read it and an earlier age. Also, since this book was written by Agatha Christie I expected an older language style that was difficult to understand, but this was not the case. It was a fairly easy read that did not take too long to get through, which helped the slow moving plot. Consequently, I could see why many people would enjoy this book due to the topic at hand, yet it was not as suspenseful as I would have liked. I found myself getting bored even during the parts that were made to be interesting. Ultimately, I personally would not recommend this book to children over the age of 12 or 13. It seemed to be directed more towards this age group. If it was rewritten to be faster moving with more plot-twists, this novel could have been better. Compared to other Agatha Christie books this was probably my least favorite. LK
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2024This is my favorite book of all time, and I'm so happy to finally own a copy!!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2022Christie is a master, no doubt. The great thing about this book is that, while spoilers are easy enough to come by, this book's twist hasn't entered into popular culture the way for example Jekyll and Hyde or Empire Strikes Back have, so that one can approach this book with a clean slate. Mysteries are always worth reading twice, and this is no exception.
Of course, this book is the poster child for the argument about whether a book should be edited to fit the times or remain unchanged in order to be a snapshot of the period in which it was written. It has undergone three title/setting changes, and this latest paperback once again removes some unsavory language.
This time, the target is a series of antisemitic remarks made toward the beginning of the book. Strangely, the spirit of the remarks remains, while simply changing out the word "Jew" for phrases like "men like that" or "those people" while still expressing the negative stereotypes of Mr. Morris, so I'm not really sure the censorship was even that successful.
But, changing the language in this novel is nothing new, and I don't think that any of the changes were really material to the story, so in this instance, I think it was probably a good idea, if somewhat ineffective.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2024I have read this book before and I know I’ve seen a couple movies from it. That being said, I guess getting older has finally paid off. I didn’t remember any specific details. Including the ending or the culprit, making this a great reread. Always happy to read (or reread) Agatha Christie. Recommend to mystery lovers everywhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars I cannot get over this book!
10/10!! I did NOT see that coming. Never in a million years. Easily one of the best books I’ve ever read. Peak Agatha Christie. This book had me gasping every chapter. The way she wrote this to go along with the poem of 10 Little Soldier Boys was brilliant! The book reversed the usual process of a murder mystery, letting us know how they died, just not who. I loved this book and everything about it (not in a creepy way!!).

5.0 out of 5 stars A good read
I was pleased with this book. It was clear, straightforward, baffling,.and yet had a perfectly reasonable expectation; in fact it had to have an epilogue in order to explain it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic - and VERY Influential - Mystery
I love Agatha Christie. I read her books sparingly, because despite there being so many, I can’t quite bear the thought of having gone through them all - so opening a new one is always a treat.
I know that this is one of her best. I know of the history, the original (awkward) title and the challenge that she presented to herself with this tale. So, like ‘Murder on the Orient Express’, I wasn’t surprised to zip through this in one sitting.
The fun here is that I was sent the book by the publisher… but with the last chapter missing. Which, if you are familiar, is the conclusion that reveals exactly what’s been going on. Without that epilogue: everybody’s dead. The killer isn’t found. Police are baffled. Author wins!
The week before publication of this special edition (in which that final chapter is tucked into the rear of the volume in a sealed envelope!), I finally got an email with a link to read the final piece of the puzzle for myself. But first, I had to participate in a poll to see if I guessed the killer correctly.
Reader, I did not. But I absolutely adored all these games, making me part of the mystery itself! To coin a very modern term, this seemed a beautifully ‘meta’ approach to a classic novel, and I do hope Ms Christie would approve (and perhaps laugh at our expense).
This mystery deserves its praise. It is so very clever, but without overstaying its welcome or over-confidently showing its hand. There’s no hints; if anything, I did get the impression that the author was going out of her way to wrong-foot the reader by omitting key details that would’ve pointed us in the right direction.
I was worried that I’d get the characters confused, as they’re all introduced in quick succession and aren’t terribly relatable - in that they reminded me of any group of teenagers in a modern horror movie, who are just there to be picked off! In fact, I soon saw the tendrils of this tale reaching down the years to genre-spanning modern movies, from ‘Glass Onion’ to ‘Saw’ (say what you like, it’s a perfect modern whodunnit that owes a lot to books like this).
The Ten all have clear motivations and histories, some more likeable than others, which meant that every chapter (and every ‘soldier’ taken off the board) meant that my theories could change from moment to moment.
My only quibble was the occasional internal monologue, one of which seemed to go against the final reveal. But the journey was so much fun, it wasn’t really a problem.
Yes, it’s a recommend. If you enjoy a good game of ‘Cluedo’, you have this book to thank - and this publisher for reissuing it in such a way that we can enjoy taking part without any of the potential for an unpleasant demise!
I was kindly sent a copy of this book by the publisher, but the above opinions are entirely my own.
