Introducing internationally bestselling author Bolu Babalola’s dazzling debut novel, full of passion, humor, and heart, that centers on a young Black British woman who has no interest in love and unexpectedly finds herself caught up in a fake relationship with the man she warned her girls about

Sweet like plantain, hot like pepper. They taste the best when together...

Sharp-tongued (and secretly soft-hearted) Kiki Banjo has just made a huge mistake. As an expert in relationship-evasion and the host of the popular student radio show Brown Sugar, she’s made it her mission to make sure the women of the African-Caribbean Society at Whitewell University do not fall into the mess of “situationships”, players, and heartbreak. But when the Queen of the Unbothered kisses Malakai Korede, the guy she just publicly denounced as “The Wastemen of Whitewell,” in front of every Blackwellian on campus, she finds her show on the brink.

They’re soon embroiled in a fake relationship to try and salvage their reputations and save their futures. Kiki has never surrendered her heart before, and a player like Malakai won’t be the one to change that, no matter how charming he is or how electric their connection feels. But surprisingly entertaining study sessions and intimate, late-night talks at old-fashioned diners force Kiki to look beyond her own presumptions. Is she ready to open herself up to something deeper?

A gloriously funny and sparkling debut novel, Honey and Spice is full of delicious tension and romantic intrigue that will make you weak at the knees.

Review

"The true stars of Honey and Spice are characterization, banter and sharp social observation, all of which Babalola renders spectacularly. She soars in her rich depictions of intimacy and relationships, in all their grandeur. And Babalola blends the vernacular and rhythms of Black American music with Black British culture, and its fusion of Pan-African influences, making the text even richer. . . . Expectations for her first full-length novel are high. Sexy, messy and wry, Honey and Spice more than delivers." — New York Times Book Review

Bolu Babalola is a British-Nigerian woman with a misleading bachelor's degree in law and a masters degree in American Politics & History from UCL. She feels it is important to state that her thesis was on Beyoncé's "Lemonade" and she was awarded a distinction for it. So essentially she has a masters degree in Beyoncé. A writer of books, scripts and retorts, a lover of love and self-coined "romcomoisseur", Bolu Babalola writes stories of dynamic women with distinct voices who love and are loved audaciously. She is a big believer in women being both "Beauty and the beast". She is not a fan of writing her own bios. She can be found tweeting far too much @BeeBabs.

This might be my favorite read in 2024 thus far. I cant believe I waited so long to read this piece of art. The writing was beautiful and poetic. The dialogue was comical, it was deep, it got sad, then it got real, then it just was, I loved that! What I enjoyed more than Kiki and Malakai, was Kiki and Aminah, ugh that is a real friendship. This story to me more than just being in love but about the love in sisterhood as well.

Kiki and Kai’s relationship was so raw and true and light hearted!!! I just loved this read so much and would recommend this to anyone looking food a quick good read and true black love 😍😍😍 The only reason why I’m giving it 4.5 instead of 5 stars is because it kinda sped up at the end and I wish it was more

This book is exceptionally, both Kiki and the author have a steal tongue, sharp and grazing and inspiring.
I am truly grateful to have read this book because not often do I read fictional books that challenge my knowledge of language and words. I am a film major with a minor in English. I am an African American young woman soon to be graduating college. I also really enjoy reading books, and this book was superb (I hate using that word). I aspire to be able to sit down and create different various fictional works and from now on this is a book that I will greatly fall back on. I will hopefully one day purchase the physical copy. I appreciated the writing format, and I’m interested to see how it differs from the physical version.

Also, now I feel compelled to share this book with my Naija college cohorts.

This was a sweet & loveable story with good characters!! It felt like a Disney movie to me, some of it being a tad cheesy and some of it being really sweet and cute. I LOVED the first like 60% but the last 40% or so wasn’t my favorite… I feel like I wanted more?? Maybe she was setting up for second book…?

I love the detailed descriptions in this book. Everything from st up of scenery, clothes, and the lingo made me feel like I was there. If using all five senses was a book... it would be Honey & Spice! 10/10 recommend for anyone.

Plenty of laughs, plenty of tears (both happy and sad) and plenty of feel good vibes.
I wish there's more to read of Kiki and Kai story cause I'm just obsessed!
Overall, it is a feel good book while also touching on the black experience. Happy that this book capped off my black history month.
Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2024
This book came highly recommended and I completely understand why. Despite being American Black and needing to learn some lingo, I was immediately hooked. I read on the train, on the escalator, on the elevator, on bathroom breaks, you name it. I should be doing MY graduate studies but I said "it's black history month lemme finish this here book."
This book is messy in the way you want some mess in a great story that ends well. The way the different cliques within Blackwell are described took me out. I couldn't stop laughing because that was Soooo perfectly described. And blending together by the end felt like the beautiful, natural conclusion. As much as I loved the romance, I was just as attached to the friendships! God. This book was just amazing.

Initially I could not get into this story, I would put it in the YA category and contemporary romance. There are predictable parts it but lots of funny parts. I enjoyed Bolu Babalola’s writing think this is a wonderful debut novel

Having had her heart broken which resulted in the loss of a friendship that hurt the most, Kiki decides that relationship are not for her and she will put her head down In College and keep herself to herself. She runs a radio show called ‘Brown Sugar’ and decides to use it to warn her listeners and protect them from the guys she calls ‘Wasteman’ the ones who have all the lines but are players in disguise.

So when she meets a handsome new student Malakai she is puzzled why he has such an affect on her. She digs deep and ignores it.

When she is offered the chance to intern in New York her lecturer stipulates that she must team up with another student. This student is picked for her and it happens to be Malakai.

Will she end up breaking her dating rules? Is Malakai the player she thinks he is?

They both have issues that make them believe that they are not cut out for relationships, how will it pan out?
