When Jacob Portman was a boy, his grandfather regaled him with stories of his fantastic life at Miss Peregrine's home during the Second World War, even sharing photos of the remarkable children with whom he resided. As Jacob grew up, though, he decided that these photos were obvious fakes, simple forgeries designed to stir up his youthful imagination. Or were they...?Following his grandfather's death - a scene Jacob literally couldn't believe with his own eyes - the sixteen-year-old boy embarks on a mission to disentangle fact from fiction in his grandfather's tall tales. But even his grandfather's elaborate yarns couldn't prepare Jacob for the eccentricities he will discover at Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children!

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

A graphic adaptation of Riggs’s popular crossover novel might seem like a strange prospect since the original is already illustrated with the odd, antique photos that inspired Riggs’ unusual tale. But Jean (Beautiful Creatures, 2013) doesn’t try to overshadow the pictures with her artwork, instead seamlessly blending them in. At first readers will find those photos as fake as 16-year-old Jacob does, believing them to be nothing more than false memories that helped his grandfather survive WWII. But when monsters prove to be real and kill Jacob’s grandfather, the boy must flee to an island off the coast of Wales to find the “peculiar” children who sheltered his grandfather, who will help Jacob learn who he is, and who he will, in the end, have to save from the monsters. Jean’s scratchy black-and-white line drawings perfectly detail Jacob’s mundane life until he discovers the island’s secrets and color comes winging in. The luminous art brings the heart of Riggs’ story to life—albeit at the expense of some character development—and should leave readers eager for the next installment. Grades 8-11. --Snow Wildsmith

Ransom Riggs was born on a farm in Maryland and grew up in Florida, but now makes his home in the land of peculiar children: Southern California, where he lives with his wife, bestselling author Tahereh Mafi. Ransom was raised on a steady diet of ghost stories and British comedy, which probably explains the novels he writes. He’s the author of the #1 bestselling Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children series, the first of which was adapted into a major motion picture from 20th Century Fox, directed by Tim Burton.

My new favorite graphic novel. I attached photos of the art. I love it, personally. I bought the second novel, too. And I started reading the actual book.

The changes from B&W to color (and back) are very well handled to designate when the main character is in the "normal" world versus the world of the Peculiars. Ms. Jean is also excellent in conveying emotion and story even in passages without dialogue, in fact this seems a particular strong point in this book. Warning: some of the monster scenes may be a bit too spooky or frightening for very young children. This is not a book to read to young kids at bedtime. But you would already know this if you read Mr. Riggs' excellent original. This graphic novel is a very successful transformation of the written word to a visual medium. It even uses some of the photos in the original book to great effect. A very nice, beautifully bound book that feels like a quality product to hold and enjoy. Highly recommended.

I was a huge fan of the main book, and also a lover of comic books and graphic novels. I saw a copy of a Miss Peregrine's graphic novel in Barnes&Noble, picked it up, and was thrilled. The characters look how I imagined them, and the drawing style in general was fantastic. I was relieved to see that it was not in the Japanese manga style that seems cheap, in some aspects, and greatly overused. I love how the lines were clean and that there wasn't an excessive amount of shading and extreme detail. The simplistic and charmingly messy art used for this book was perfectly coupled with the novel Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.

Another great adaptation, though it's definitely lacking the rich detail of the novel. I wouldn't recommend reading this unless you've already read the novel - I'd fear that it would put you off the book. (Although I suppose it could peak your interest and make you want to read the novel!)

This edition gives a great overview of the plot. It's the children that get left on the wayside - in the novel we're introduced to many children and there's a lot of detail about their talents. In this version, mainly Emma and Millard showcase their talents, and even that is at a minimum. The danger of the situation also feels downplayed. But, having already read the novel, this book was a great refresher for the sequel that's coming out soon, and I really loved the art style. It was edgy and the colors simplistic, but I enjoyed looking at each page

The graphic novel stayed really true to the original book. But like other reviewers have said, it's probably a good idea to read the book first if you want the whole story because the graphic novel does leave a lot out. I was fine with what it left out though because they left some of the parts that I found to be a bit more uncomfortable. VERY MINOR SPOILER(Like when Uncle Oggie gets huffy over Jacob saying about refugees.)/SPOILER

The only downside was that my copy, at least, smelled horrendous. After reading it for maybe half an hour I felt sick to my stomach. Didn't stop me from finishing it though. Just... don't hold the book too close to your face.

I love graphic art novels and comics. I read the reviews that said the art was great in this. I have to fully disagree. The art was TERRIBLE. Most of it was done in black and white in a quick sketchy style versus artfully constructed scenes. The way the characters were drawn it was hard to tell who was a guy or a girl (other than Emma) from one page to another. This should have been epic! It’s Miss Peregrine and the Peculiar Children. I totally was underwhelmed and disappointed.

Tuvo pequeños cambios, es un poco diferente al libro, y siento que no logró capturar la pérdida de Jacob, en sí el arte era agradable a la vista pero muy simple, pero aún así siento que vale la pena leerlo ya que es muy rápido de leer.
