5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating read for children old and young!
This was a superb story which was based around real events and people. Although aimed at children aged between nine and eleven, I (forty six) thoroughly enjoyed it. The book prompted me to find out more about Abyssinia (modern day Ethiopia) and the events around which the story is based. Recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good children's book
A very engaging book, based on the true story of an Abyssinian prince who was brought to Victorian Britain after his father the King was killed by British troops.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really interesting
A really interesting historical novel, probably best aimed at 12-14 year-olds. It follows the story of Alamayu, the child of an African ruler who falls to the forces of the British Empire. Alamayu subsequently finds himself at public school in England where we follow his memories of the past and struggles to integrate. Well researched and thought-provoking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Dejazmatch Alemayehu Tewodros, often referred to as HIH Prince Alemayehu or Alamayou of Ethiopia was the son of Emperor Tewodros II of Ethiopia. IN 1868 his father, Emperor Tewodros II committed suicide after his defeat by the British, led by Sir Robert Napier, at the Battle of Magdala in 1868.
Alemayou was taken by a Captain Speedy to England and was intruduced to Queen Victoria, who took a great interest in him. He was sent first to Cheltenham College and then to Rugby. He attended Sandhurst, but wasn't happy there and moved to Far Headingley, Leeds, West Yorkshire to stay with his old tutor Cyril Ransome. Within a week he contracted pleurisy, and he died after six weeks of illness, despite the attentions of Dr Clifford Allbutt of Leeds and other respected consultants, aged 18.
This is Alamayu's story, seen through his eyes: the battle, the journey to England and the trauma of an English public school as he comes to terms with the hand that fate has dealt him and tries to build a new life.
