For many well educated people in Latin America the name of Andres Bello that The Economist christened the new column about the region could appear as a surprise. This book demonstrate that it is well deserved.
It is a historical biography, balanced and making justice to the leading role and example that Chile offers to other LA countries today ,a position that has its roots in the institutional building efforts that Bello dedicated his life.
Why not five stars? Because Brazil is part of Latin America and is just mentioned once in a side comment.
LA , a continuous piece of land sharing the same historical background and facing the same challenges, must be more used to know and praise the "great men", coming from whichever country, that created the foundations for the political and social development of the region.
Bello, Sarmiento, Jose Bonifacio in the past Vargas Llosa and Fernando Henrique Cardoso in the present are among them.

This book-length intellectual biography of Andrés Bello, first published in 2001, is the first to appear in English. Bello, the most important intellectual of nineteenth-century Latin America, made enduring contributions to the fields of international law, civil legislation, grammar and philology. He was also a poet of note, a literary critic and an influential statesman whose contributions to nation-building and Spanish American identity are widely recognized across the region. In this book, Jaksic provides an archival-based critical account that challenges the celebratory literature that has dominated Bello studies. He demonstrates how knowledge of Bello's contributions illuminate not only Latin American history, but also current issues of imperial fragmentation, nationalism and language.
