A great read

This book is a superb account of what it means to be an officer serving in a combat unit in today's military. Part memoir, part tribute to his platoon, the author traces his Army career from ROTC Cadet life as an Ivy League student, through the rigors of Ranger School and the challenges of leading a light infantry platoon in Afghanistan, ending with a discussion on the experience of returning to civilian life after being in combat. Exum's philosophy on leadership makes this book a must-read for all aspiring or current military officers and stands out as the most insightful and lasting contribution of the work. From understanding the relationship between subordinates and leaders (NCOs and officers), to dissecting the realities of life in a combat unit vs. the schoolhouse or textbook way of leading soldiers, Exum's lessons would do wonders for the military if they were more closely followed by those currently in command. Beyond it's philosophical discussions, however, "This Man's Army" is packed with exciting and fast-paced scenes from training and combat with a liberal dash of hilarious Army pranks and other soldier humor, nicely balanced with the author's own musings on the War on Terror, politics, and the psychological effects of combat and killing. No matter what your person politics are, if you are interested in knowing what it means to be a soldier fighting in Iraq or Afghanistan, and gaining a better understanding of the rigors our servicemen face and the sacrifices they make, read "This Man's Army".

The background and training of an Army Officer

I found the training part of the author who is an Army office very interesting but the book started to lag toward the end which is why I gave it four stars. Still, the author was a dedicated military professional who goes through hard training and lead by example.
