You're a Mean One, Matthew Prince (Boy Meets Boy, 2) Paperback – October 4, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
An "effervescent" (Rachel Lynn Solomon) stand-alone Christmas LGBTQIA+ New Adult RomCom, perfect for fans of Schitt's Creek and Red White & Royal Blue.
BRING A LITTLE JOY TO THE WORLD? NOT TODAY, SANTA.
Matthew Prince is young, rich, and thoroughly spoiled. So what if his parents barely remember he exists and the press is totally obsessed with him? He's on top of the world. But one major PR misstep later, and Matthew is cut off and shipped away to spend the holidays in his grandparents' charming small town hellscape. Population: who cares?
It's bad enough he's stuck in some festive winter wonderland―it's even worse that he has to share space with Hector Martinez, an obnoxiously attractive local who's unimpressed with anything and everything Matthew does.
Just when it looks like the holiday season is bringing nothing but heated squabbles, the charity gala loses its coordinator and Matthew steps in as a saintly act to get home early on good behavior…with Hector as his maddening plus-one. But even a Grinch can't resist the unexpected joy of found family, and in the end, the forced proximity and infectious holiday cheer might be enough to make a lonely Prince's heart grow three sizes this year.
While part of a series, this book stands alone.

Review
"This is holiday rom-com perfection. Sparkling with a gloriously fresh, witty voice and timely messages of healing and hopeful new beginnings, YOU'RE A MEAN ONE, MATTHEW PRINCE is tender, sexy, and deeply heartfelt―a new all-time favorite!
" ― Chloe Liese, author of the Bergman Brothers series
"YOU'RE A MEAN ONE, MATTHEW PRINCE is a funny, heartwarming pop of Christmas sparkle with a protagonist whose selfish ways are so entertaining to read that I'm almost sorry he can't be bad forever―but with as funny as Matthew is when he's wicked, his redemption arc is equally satisfying, sweet as a chai sugar cookie, and I was rooting for him and Hector, as well as the whole town, from the moment Matthew Prince stepped into Wind River in his Gucci boots." ― Sarah Hogle author of You Deserve Each Other and Twice Shy

- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2024I purchased this book after seeing and following the author on TikTok. It sat in my library for a bit. I finally dug in during a long power outage just before the Holidays and it was perfect timing. The story is adorable with a bit of steam. Timothy has crafted vibrant characters that jump from the pages and draw you in.
I’ve since purchased the other books in the series as well as the latest release from the author The Fake Dating Game and can’t wait to get into all of them!
If you’re looking for a fun, smooth read that gives the feels of a pop cult rom com. Get this book and everything written by Timothy Janovsky!!

Oh my where do I start, I could have not finished reading this one on a more perfect day than Christmas Eve. I will say the amount of time “dude” was made my head hurt, and to be honest you could making it a drinking game with a book club. Anyways I will say I really did enjoy reading this book, it’s cute, heartwarming, and well who doesn’t love a romcom and well Christmas. Matthew, was something…something of a spoil brate honestly. Him having to be sent off because he bought an island and his parents didn’t want it in the media. Oh btw his mother is a famous author and his dad is some big shot financial wizard. He’s sent to his grandparents in this festive winter land where he meets Hector. Hector sounds dreamy other than him always saying “dude” in almost ever sentence. Matt and Hector don’t start out strong, there are some fights and bickering, but they end up working together on a charity gala for the community, and in that time they start to respect one another, and well start getting some feelings…and it all crashes the night of the gala, Matt’s scandal with the island hits the press and well his mom says his was a young man with and “H” name trying to extort them….well Matt took it h ma s Hector and well…..it wasn’t…it was…..

I am in a bit of a reading slump and this didn’t break it out, so maybe that’s some of my feelings. I just think maybe this wasn’t for me right now. I do love how it deals with anxiety and there’s some great side characters. I just had trouble with the actual romance of it. Maybe I needed hectors POV to help, idk. I just didn’t feel any chemistry
- Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2022I ADORED this book. Timothy is fast becoming one of my favorite authors of rom-coms. He's an instant buy for me. Matthew Prince, a rich, spoiled, dare I say, BRAT, finds himself cut off from his family's fortune and forced to spend the holidays with his grandparents in a quaint small town. I don't want to give anything away, but let's just say Matthew learns lessons about life, himself, and the meaning of Christmas. Timothy's writing warms my heart. If you're looking for a sweet holiday rom-com with just a little spice, you can't miss with this title.
Featuring ~ M/M & Bi rep, Christmas, forced proximity, small town, opposites attract, mental health
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2022I’m torn. Timothy Janovsky’s You’re a Mean One, Matthew Prince has its charms, and it certainly has its virtues. Most notably, the novel deals with the very real mental disorder GAD, generalized anxiety disorder, something that affects not only the general population but particularly those in the LGBTQ+ community. Janovsky is to be commended. His touch is light and never preachy on this topic, but he sheds light on it—and that is important. The story arc for the main character Matthew Prince is a good one, as well, as Matthew learns more and more about himself. And the plot is definitely enjoyable and not a heavy, heavy one, as it could have been. So why am I torn? First of all, it is my own fault perhaps. I thought, from reading the descriptive blurb, this was going to be a light and airy gay rom-com set at Christmas, a sort of TV Christmas movie novel. It is in some ways, but it goes much deeper than I was willing to delve as I read it surrounding the Christmas holidays. I wanted something funny and distracting. What I got was an exploration of the psyche, albeit a fairly light exploration. I wasn’t prepared for that, so my bad. My biggest criticism is that I never truly liked Matthew, not when he is the spoiled, privileged rich brat nor after he grows and sees the error of his ways. I hope that isn’t a spoiler because, after all, that is inevitable in a novel of this genre. Put simply, Matthew irritated me, and I never got into a forgiving frame of mind, no matter how much Janovsky spelled out his motivations. And just when I was a bit ready to forgive him, Janovsky tacked on an epilogue that I found to be totally unbelievable. It is one year later, and that, to me, just seemed too quick for such major changes to have taken effect in Matthew’s life. But I applaud Janovsky and I’m glad I read the book for one passage that was beautifully stated and spoke the ultimate truth for all people in general and gay people in specific: “You helped me see that home is not a place. It’s people. It’s the people you choose to invest in, believe in—the people you let hold your heart.” These are words from Matthew, and wiser words were never spoken. I’ve long believed family is not necessarily blood relations, but those we love and those who love us. For that message alone, I can recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2023I found this book after reading one of the few Roan Parrish novels I hadn’t read. I didn’t expect much because the title is the worst part of this book. It’s a lovely, sappy, gay romance. The characters are a delight. The pacing and detail are well done, but most of all it does what a good romance does…tug at your heart. Yes we could pick apart little details, but this is a fun read that is totally worth it!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2024the romance wasn’t very believable at first and felt a little forced, but i was rooting for them by the end. i really appreciated the honest and accurate portrayal of anxiety and how it manifests.

4.0 out of 5 stars More than meets the eye with this book
I liked Mathew and could feel for him but I can see how many wouldn’t see the true him. He really grew on me and part way through I wondered how they could really be together to have a HEA but then it all came together in a delightful way. I was really rooting for them and this was more than a fluffy Christmas story. I really enjoyed it & it shows how you shouldn’t judge people by their outside appearance.

5.0 out of 5 stars cute lgbt+ christmas romance and mental health awareness
This is such a cute holiday read🎄✨At first I was unsure if I would like this, but after the first chapter I was hooked. I was ok the edge with the characters so many times and I adore all the characters so so much. This story really goes all the way by making you spend the christmas month in this cute little town with all those lovely characters and the interesting romance, that shows how two people grow together. Do yourself a favour, give this a try, you will not regret it once the story really gets going🩷 I definitly wanna read more from this author.

3.0 out of 5 stars Far from charming
Thank the Lord I managed to finish this one.
Like I've never struggled with a contemporary romance like I have with this one.
Did I pick this book up mainly due to the absolutely cute cover, the usual big bad city guy goes to a small town, learns the error of his ways and falls in love synopsis and because it's christmassy? I absolutely did and I am not ashamed to admit it.
What I am completely willing to admit is that I should've maybe done some research about this book because... Well, it was a mediocre overall rating on here for a reason, after all.
My main issue with this book is how absolutely unlikeable the main character is, right until the third act of the book.
Matthew Prince was written in such a way that there's no way you'd root for him, like no.
He not only admits to deleting texts from his GRANDMA, but he spends the majority of the first third of the book treating not only his grandparents, but the general population of this town, truly badly.
Spoiled, entitled, whiny brat that had no redeeming qualities at the start of the book.
Does he get better and turns into a semi-decent human being by the end of it? Sure, but I couldn't get over how he was written at the beginning.
Also, a pet peeve of mine is when a rich character just names luxury brands in books, like it gets on my nerves, and this was the case in this book, multiplied by a thousand.
We get it, you're rich, stop it now.
Other than that, this was an okay "new adult" contemporary romance with very few elements that made it an actual "new adult" novel.
Very little smutty content happened on page, very closed door, but I guess that mixed with the cursing was enough for it to be considered NA?
The plot was cute enough, the side characters brought just enough life to the book but were pretty forgettable otherwise and as for the romance... I liked it, but I didn't love love it, you know?
The third act conflict was enjoyable enough and it worked with what the plot was going for, but I didn't like that he basically bought his friends's forgiveness with gifts, you know?
Can't say I recommend this book so do with that what you will.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Christmas romcom with depth
This was a lovely Christmas romcom story but with added depth. It had some great mental health representation as well as being an LGBTQ+ story. Everything I could want for a festive read.
