- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2015The Rental Heart and Other Fairy Tales, at the name of the collection suggests, plays with the expectations of a fairy tale with a literary twist. Logan's stories--whether they complicate and distort common fairy tales (almost) beyond recognition, or evoke the sense of a fairy tale with all new narratives--are all about illuminating the nuanced demons inside ourselves with much less certainty and a whole lot more punch than a fairy tale in a traditional sense. Worth the price ten times over.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2015The Rental Heart and Other Stories is a great collection of stories. I enjoyed every tale. I’m a big fan of fairytales and love reading modern versions so this collection was right up my street.
The tales in this collection are just the right shade of dark that I love. They’re quite twisted, disturbing, beautiful and haunting in equal measures. I absolutely loved these stories. I could read them again and again. I really can’t wait to read her novel, The Gracekeepers. I won’t read it for a while though. I plan to re-do the Popsugar Reading Challenge next year with different books. The Gracekeepers will be one of my choices.
Every story in this collection was great. As always, I have a few favourites. I thought The Rental Heart was amazing and one of the best stories I’ve read in ages. I’d like if this turned into a full-length novel. The Broken West really unsettled me. Girl #18 was also fantastic as was The Gracekeeper. All the Better to Eat You With and The Man from the Circus will stay with me for a long time. Sleeping Beauty is the stand out tale of this collection. I got chills down my spine with every word.
The Rental Heart and Other Stories deserved to win the Scott Prize. This is a fantastic collection of stories. I’d highly recommend it. I can’t wait to read more of this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Disturbing - in a good way
Here’s a fresh take on story-telling, a bunch of stories that give you glimpses of alternative ways and worlds. I’ve read most of them more than once and will again, and I’m still thinking about some of them.
I guess you could call some of them - unflinching? Graphic? Logan thinks the thing most of us shy away from and then follows it through and that’s uncomfortable. But always compelling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beguiling, clever and brilliantly strange
This is a beautiful and thoughtful collection of modern fairy-tales from the pen of a writer who's sure to be a future star. Variety is a key ingredient for a successful short story collection, and the style and tone vary from wistful to funny to erotic to frightening. Like other reviewers, I loved "Una And Coll Are Not Friends", but there are plenty of other beautiful highlights (I particularly recommend "Coin Operated Boys" and the title story, "The Rental Heart").
If you like fairy-tales as told by Walt Disney, this is probably not the collection for you. If you like fairy-tales and told by Angela Carter, get on and buy this right now.

3.0 out of 5 stars Moderate enthusiasm.
Unusual, and as other reviewers have said, patchy quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful escapism
Not usually a lover of short stories, I was intrigued enough by the front cover and reviews to purchase it ... and I`m glad I did. Surreal, poignant and beautifully written. Really enjoyed every story. Favourite one - Una and Coll are not Friends.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very mixed, and unrewarding
I'm a big fan of short stories, so I picked this up for my Kindle in the hope of finding one or two gems.
I concur with Mister Hobgoblin that the real standout is Una and Coll are Not Friends.
Many of the stories had interesting starts, but the whole was not the sum of the potential.
I really struggled to get through it, and it became a chore rather than a pleasure.
Sorry, because I do generally like the genre, and can usually find good things to say about such a collection.
Of course, we all have differing ideas, so if you like the sound of it, don't let me put you off.
