About the author
Terry was born in Sunderland, England, in 1946 and now lives in County Durham, in the North-east of England.
Terry's father (Billy) was a butcher in Hendon, Sunderland, and his mother (Freda) was the manageress of a clothing shop. He worked many years in his father's butcher shop as a boy. It was better than school where he was beaten, bullied and abused by his loathsome teachers.
Terry began his career as a professional actor in 1972 when he joined Theatre Powys in Mid-Wales. As an actor with Theatre Powys Terry began writing scripts for some of the shows. One of the most successful was a children's show called "The Custard Kid". The "Custard Kid" tour ended but Terry didn't want to lose the exciting tale so he turned it into a children's novel, published by A & C Black.
He has also worked as a theatre-director, museum manager, drama teacher, television presenter. He has written and acted for television since 1974 and scripted and appearing in British movies.
In 48 years as an author his writing has included fiction and popular non-fiction for children and adults. He has published 354 books in 45 languages and sold over 38 million copies.
In 2009 CBBC Television launched a major television series of his Horrible Histories which has gone on to win several Children's BAFTA awards. In February 2011 the TV series won a British Comedy Award for best sketch show - the first children's show ever to win a Comedy Award. The same month Terry Deary became the 10th most-borrowed author in British libraries.
A series of theatre plays, 'Horrible Histories', have been created in collaboration with Birmingham Stage Company touring the UK, Australia, the Middle East and Far East.
Terry's adult non-fiction title 'A history of Britain in Ten Enemies' (Penguin-Transworld) appeared in 2024 and his first adult murder-mystery 'Actually I'm a murderer' (Constable & Robinson) in 2025.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2016My daughter got this for Christmas and LOVES it. Everything is "Mommy, did you know that....?????". She is fascinated, as are my husband and I and we have started reading them, and he is a history teacher!! So many really cool details that I challenge anyone to remember from their school days, presented entertainingly. We'll be getting the rest of the sets for sure - Maths, Geography, Science...these are so good. And the TV show that goes along with it is awesome. My kids watch it over and over when an episode comes on.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2018We first came upon Horrible Histories this past summer in London. My then 9 year old grandson was fascinated by the book we bought him, and asked for more for his 10th birthday this September. He loves the wittiness of the writing and regales us with what he’s learning. What more can you ask for? A child who loves reading a book and is actually learning from them! And they are such a bargain. I highly recommend these books.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2019My 29 year old son loved these when he was a child and instilled a love of history and reading. We discovered them on a vacation in a bookstore in London. They were hard to find in the US. I order the whole lot of them for him to give his children when they are old enough.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2023My girls have many books to choose from about all different subjects. Yet, they prefer to read these. Every day I hear new history facts that they've learned from Horrible Histories.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2020Love it! My 8 year old girl hated many other history books but this collection is her favorite! This collection makes kids understand histories in easy and fun way. Recommend to any kids who’s not very interested in histories.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2018Books are great! Awesome content, well written, funny illustrations. Unfortunately, the outside box that contains the books was crushed. The shipping box was fine so the package contents either shifted around and were damaged during shipping or the box was crushed when they shipped it. One entire corner of the top of the box is destroyed and the side is competently split apart. One of the books was bent up because of the damage. The rest were fine. Thank goodness this wasn't a present for someone. I can turn the damaged portion to the back so it can't be seen on a bookshelf.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2019My son would like to give these books infinite stars because "They teach him all kinds of cool things and make him laugh." He loves that the stories are all true, don't hold back on the gruesome bits, and I love that he can read them by himself. We had run out of things for him to read, and it's difficult to find things that hold his interest. 5/5 from Momma.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2015I cannot get enough of the Horrible Histories series. The books, the DVDs- I say that they are for my students, but really I enjoy reading them. I have learned more about history through these books than any AP History teacher in high school!! They are witty, fun, interactive, and for the most part historically accurate! A great addition to a historians library- I kid you not!

5.0 out of 5 stars Its not all dates and battles.
Absolutely fabulous collection of books spanning the centuries and bringing history to life in a clear and simple way. It presents history as a fun concept with all the little bits that makes it real - history for the disinterested.
You can dip in and out of each book as you please and always come away with great little snippets that are likely to get you remembering the 'important' bits too.
Great for school children and adults who were bored to senseless during their own schooldays .

5.0 out of 5 stars Olga J. R.
Estupenda colección de la Historia de la Humanidad contada para niños en tono sarcástico y burlón pero que les permite aprenderla, entenderla y recordar detalles de manera divertida y gráfica.
Lenguaje adecuado a partir de 10 años.
