The book captures something rather lovely, which is that for all its rugged individualism, frontier violence, and capitalist churn, there’s always this search for grace in America. I haven’t seen it in any other country that I’ve been to. You can drive all day on Sunday through Appalachia, say, and you’ll hear the singing in the churches.
