“What I like about Pelham 123 is that the train is always moving. You feel the tension of movement and action. You realise that Transit Police Lieutenant Zachary Garber—played brilliantly by Walter Matthau in the movie—is the good guy, and he is trying to solve the problem. What fascinated me was how many angles it was written from. You read it from someone on the platform. You read it from someone in the train. But most of all, in the movie, I enjoyed seeing it from the headquarters, where the work is being done on different television screens. And while they are impotent at one level, because all they can do is press buttons and watch, it didn’t take away from the tension. It added to it. And that is crossed with the obvious puzzle – how are the hijackers, led by Mr Blue, going to escape when they are on a public train in a tunnel? It makes for a very, very exciting denouement, where you discover the bad guy isn’t quite as bad as you thought.” Read more...
