The main character, Sebastião Rodrigues, is sent to Japan to help the persecuted church, but he is captured and told to publicly renounce his faith by intentionally stepping on a bronze image of Christ. If he resists, then many Christian peasants will continue to be tortured and killed because of his resistance.
