“The Kraken Wakes hasn’t been filmed – it would be very difficult to film, because it’s a drowned world story – but it has been made into a computer game. He does this very clever thing: we think this story is about aliens. We’re pretty sure it’s about aliens. But we never actually see them in any way…it’s a very unusual alien invasion story in that we see some of the things the aliens make, but we never really see the aliens themselves; and we never really know what kills them in the end.
