Books for Kids Age 9-12
recommended by librarians, teachers, authors and kids
Last updated: November 18, 2024
Below you will find kids' own recommendations of their favourite books in subjects ranging from philosophy to graphic novels and manga. There are also interviews with bestselling children's authors, such as Cressida Cowell on magical stories for kids and Robin Stevens on the best books on kid detectives, as well as nonfiction recommendations for science books and chess books.
Many 9-12 year olds are still reluctant readers. We have recommendations for scary books and horror (preferably with a good dose of humour), science fiction and verse novels to engage those 9-12 year olds who think that books are not for them. Author Robert Muchamore recommends books specifically for the reluctant 12-year-old reader. For children who have developed a dislike of reading due to dyslexia, remember that audiobooks are another brilliant way to access stories.
