Because of Ireland’s strategic importance Hitler sent over a contingent to Ireland in order to subvert the IRA of the time to the cause, on the basis that ‘My enemy’s enemy is my friend’. It failed spectacularly, partly because of De Valera’s manipulative brilliance.
