These are five books that have made me hoot, snort and cry with laughter, books I return to time and time again especially when I need a lift. And when I don’t. There are a fair few funny books in my home – but these in particular have earned a special place on my bookshelves.

"There's something nasty in the woodshed"... there is no need to say more. One of the funniest books ever written.

When I felt I'd out grown Paddington Bear, Roald Dahl and Terry Pratchett (no-one really grows out of Paddington Bear!) I found Jeeves and Wooster. Bonkers and faintly ridiculous in sizeable portions. I love them. I will always love these books. Sheer joy.

In which a gallant young hero's optimism is severely tested by earthquakes, syphilis, a run-in with the inquisition and ... murder. One of the finest satires.

This is the book that I snort with laughter reading. Tears streaming down face of both laughter and genuine heart-break. It totally undoes me. If you need a firmer waistline look no further – you'll have a six-pack from giggling after reading this.
