In Kristin Hannah’s second novel, a wealthy female trader sees her vast fortune wiped out in the stock market crash of 1893. Desperate to recoup what she can, she follows Dr Larance Digby, a university professor, to South America to reclaim the money she has invested in a fanciful expedition to find a lost Aztec city. This 1992 book can be difficult to get hold of. There are two editions—one with a rather romantic, if pedestrian, pastoral cover, the other a very racy gold number featuring an embossed couple in flagrante.
