Books by Jessica Bruder
“Bruder’s book started as a cover story for Harper’s Magazine. She created this book about low-income Americans, how they survive, how they travel from place to place, how they take seasonal employment…The spine is provided by a woman called Linda May. The book follows her travels until she eventually finds a place in the desert where some sort of home can be built. There’s a sense of somebody settling down at the end. Throughout the book, there are several other characters who the writer and Linda May encounter in their travels. One of the places they visit is a town called Empire in Nevada, formerly centered upon a gypsum plant that was closed in 2011. The book has an episodic structure. We learn the stories of various individuals and couples who have previously had a stable existence, but who now find themselves on the road.” Read more...
