“The Beast Player is wonderful. It’s a kind of middle grade teen fantasy set in an imaginary, medieval Japanese world. In a way, the book could be called The Beast Tamer, because it’s about a young girl who learns to control these beasts, these Toda. The author, Nahoko Uehashi, studied anthropology.
