The Letters of Pliny the Younger
by Pliny the Younger
These are the letters Pliny the Younger wrote and offer a wonderful window into the mind of a Roman citizen c. 100 AD. It includes the letter he wrote about the death of his uncle, Pliny the Elder, author of the Natural History, a victim of the eruption of Mt Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder was in charge of the Roman fleet at Misenum and, according to his nephew, the sight of the volcano erupting "made the scientist in my uncle determined to see it from closer at hand."
