Teen LGBT books can feel relatable, comforting, and inspiring. They have the potential to open one’s eyes to many different voices and perspectives, helping individuals understand one another better. My own experience of reading these books helped me come to terms with being in the LGBT community; helping me understand, but also relate, to the challenges as well. Whatever you identify as I would recommend these books to anyone!
1
I strongly recommend this book, as having read it a few years ago, it has helped me understand why people are transgender and the impact it has on family life. The story is about a family where the father comes out as transgender. The story explores how this changes daily life for the family.
2
One of my favourite books, a fun and light-hearted read; focussing on a boy called Alex who falls in love with another boy, relating to typical day-to-day teen drama!
3
This story explores the challenges faced by same sex couples when they wish to have a baby, and explores the option of surrogacy. Reading this helped me understand the process and also the struggles experienced by other people. This book is interesting to teens, particularly those who are discovering their sexuality, as they imagine their future as an adult.
4
Asexuality isn't widely explored in many literature or films but this book covers it perfectly. It has helped me understand the challenges that asexual people face and how it affects them.
5
I have chosen this book as it thoroughly explores the uncomfortable nature of knowing you are born in the wrong body. It covers the topics of transphobia, coming out to parents and school, and the feeling of keeping your true identify secret.
