One of Charlie and my greatest pleasures in life is reading with the kids. We read with them when waiting for a train, or sitting around, or just before bed. The key to successful and lengthy reading is to find series that are fascinating for both adults and for kids. Both you and they want to be excited to find out what happens next, and rushing to get back to reading together. What series should we embark on next? We are looking for our next mesmerizing read…
1
The Laura Ingalls Wilder books are wonderful to read with the kids. They loved every second, and I found the details of pioneer life and how they did things (like smoke ham) just fascinating.
2
This a fun series and reading it, you find out A LOT about life in ancient Rome (the sponges ugh!). The author clearly has done a lot of research because when I read Pliny's letter about the eruption of Vesuvius, it all seemed very familiar...I'd already read about it in a Roman mystery.

I do meet people who aren't keen on Harry Potter, but I think they're fabulous. The kids really enjoy them and there's enough substance and humour in there for adults to have a really nice time reading them too.
4
This is a lovely series, centred about Lyra, an Oxford-based girl. It's got lots of religious themes, and it's about other worlds, but the author is an atheist. Really fascinating to read both for the kids and the adults.

Sorry, cheating here as it's not a series but we love EVERYTHING by Cynthia Harnett. This is partly because of where we live, near the Cotswolds where a lot of her books are set. Also, we love historical fiction.
