“Bakker is writing a masterwork. I would consider him the greatest living writer of grimdark fantasy, and his battle scenes are something else…It’s a world that’s almost totally defined by war. The whole book is spent either following an army around, or in palaces, talking about war. But yes, it’s about the fact that war and a militarised society will mean that everything is militarised: army and war is the most important thing, and that feeds through to everything.
