They weren’t given the weight that they deserve. Perhaps girls, specifically, are often told that what they feel and, more pertinently, what they experience during those early years somehow don’t count, that you haven’t yet entered ‘real life.’ It is a form of silencing, and the first time we learn not to speak up—to smile.
