The novel is set in the 1980s around the Tamil and Sinhalese conflict, so you have the riots. Arjie is sent to an all boys’ prep school. That’s wonderful for him because he’s getting more and more attracted to boys, but it’s also dangerous because the boy he’s most attracted to is openly gay, or as openly gay as he can be.
