Leyla and Majnun
by Fuzuli (Muhammad bin Suleyman).
The main difference between this version and Nizami’s is that Fuzuli is talking about the love story not so much between a man and a woman but between man and God. He is one the strongest Sufi poets of all time, writing originally in the Azerbaijani language. His version of ‘Leyla and Majnun’ is much more symbolic, and it lays foundations, in my opinion, for many following poetry traditions around the Eastern world. He is a great Azeri poet and should be better known!
